Time passes unceasingly, yet the qin melody endures; half a century has gone by, while the spirit of the guqin remains eternal. On May 23rd, guqin practitioners from all over the world gather for this elegant gathering. Taking the guqin as the vessel and pure tones as tribute, we shall inherit the everlasting qin heritage at the National Joint Commemorative Gathering for the 50th Anniversary of the Passing of Master Zha Fuxi.
Master Zha Fuxi is a paramount master of 20th-century Chinese qin studies, a pivotal scholar-artist who carried forward traditional qin culture and rescued guqin art from decline. Devoting his entire life to sorting out qin history, collating qin tablatures, and promoting qin education nationwide, he upheld the orthodox lineage of guqin amid the gradual decline of qin Dao, and preserved cultural morality amid historical vicissitudes. Through his lifelong dedication, he established an integrated qin academic system connecting tradition and modernity, leaving profound cultural heritage for posterity. Fifty years have elapsed, yet his artistic spirit and moral integrity endure timelessly. Resonating as gentle wind above strings and scholarly grace within studios, his legacy continues to nurture generations of guqin successors.

On May 23rd, we meet through the guqin and respect one another with sincere hearts. Crossing mountains and seas, we gather in Quli. This sacred city of Qufu, hometown of Confucius, witnesses the endless flow of the Zhu and Si Rivers and the everlasting inheritance of rituals and music. It has long been a land of profound culture where strings and songs have never ceased. This gathering is not only to cherish the noble virtue and profound artistic attainments of the late master, but also to carry forward the consistent qin culture originating from this sacred land.
May the clear seven strings echo the gentle breeze over the Zhu and Si Rivers. May we dedicate our sincere hearts to elegant melodies and convey eternal reverence through ages. May all fellow qin lovers stand united to pass down the heritage of the guqin, inherit the ritual and music teachings of the sage, let qin melodies linger forever in Quli, and sustain the profound cultural lineage in Qufu for all time.

Rooted in Qufu—the hometown of Confucius on the banks of the Zhu and Si Rivers—the Qufu Confucius Artists Association is a non-profit cultural institution dedicated to inheriting Confucian ritual-music civilization and promoting the essence of traditional Chinese culture and classical yayue art. The association assembles outstanding traditional artists from Qufu and surrounding regions. Centered on revitalizing Confucian qin studies and innovating traditional elegant music, it commits to in-depth inheritance of traditional Chinese culture and facilitates its creative transformation and innovative development, enabling the millennia-old sage tradition and classical artistic charm to thrive in contemporary society. Headquartered in the Qufu Confucius Culture Park, the association was founded by Ms. Kong Xue, with Ms. Kong Jun—a distinguished inheritor of Confucian qin studies and ritual-music culture—serving as Secretary-General.

Under the leadership of Ms. Kong Jun, the Xiaoshao Qin Academy has long been devoted to the research of Confucian qin Dao and the dissemination of ritual-music culture. Deeply grounded in the indigenous qin heritage of Qufu, the academy adheres to the tenet of embodying ritual through the qin and illuminating Dao through music. Based in the birthplace of Confucianism, it focuses on inheriting the Kong Mansion qin tradition, restoring ancient Confucian yayue, and researching guqin craftsmanship. It hosts characteristic cultural inheritance programs including ritual-music workshops, professional qin training courses, and sacred-land cultural study tours, serving as a core platform for popularizing guqin art and continuing the Confucian qin lineage.
The core connection between Zha Fuxi and the guqin and qin studies of the Confucian Mansion lies in his rescue and collation of Qin Yuan Xin Chuan Quan Bian , a pivotal qin literature of the Confucian Mansion.Compiled by Kong Xingyou, a descendant of the Confucian clan in Qufu during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, this classic work embodies the family-inherited doctrines of rituals, music and qin learning of the Confucian Mansion, yet it was nearly lost to oblivion in China. During his academic visit to the United States, Zha Fuxi discovered its sole extant copy in the Library of Congress, made photocopies and brought them back to China, reviving this precious literary legacy.Later, while presiding over the compilation of major qin documentary projects such as Comprehensive Collection of Qin Melodies, he included and collated this qin tablature compiled by the Confucian Mansion as vital historical material and authoritative edition, systematically incorporating it into the modern academic framework of guqin studies. In his research on qin history, he affirmed its orthodox Confucian essence and yayue attributes that carry forward Confucius’ ritual and music philosophy, established the important status of Confucian Mansion qin studies in the qin history of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and enabled the lost cultural heritage of such qin learning to be passed down continuously.

This guqin, named Mild Wind and Timely Rain, is specially selected for this event. Crafted in the Banana-leaf style during the Republic of China period, it measures 115.9 centimeters in overall length, with an effective vibrating string length of 107.5 centimeters, a head width of 15.4 centimeters, a shoulder width of 21 centimeters, a tail width of 14 centimeters and a body thickness of 4 centimeters. Crafted with paulownia top board, the guqin named Mild Wind and Timely Rain is fully coated in chestnut-shell-hued lacquer, inlaid with mother-of-pearl hui markers and fitted with sandalwood tuning pegs and feet, and features rectangular sound cavities. Its title is carved in clerical script right above the main sound hole, while a vermilion inner inscription inside both sound holes reads: Made reverently in ancient style by qin craftsman Fang Jinsheng in the auspicious early spring of the Renxu year, the twelfth year of the Republic of China.

This guqin is presumably one of a batch crafted jointly by Sun Sen, a native of Danyang, Jiangsu who held official office in Shanxi, and master qin maker Fang Jinsheng from Wutai, exclusively for Shanxi Yucai Academy founded by Yan Xishan. Sun Sen, whose exact birth and death years remain unrecorded, styled himself Jingchen and used the literary alias Jiangdong Buyi. Educated in family scholarship from an early age, he was well versed in poetry, classics and ancient prose, and also proficient in Kunqu opera, guqin and xiao flute. From the ninth to the twelfth year of the Republic of China (1920-1923), he engaged qin craftsman Fang Jinsheng to select high-quality dragon-gate timber. The raw wood was subjected to ten days and nights of boiling treatment and exposed to intense sunlight for a full year before being used for qin making, yielding a total of 212 guqins. Most of them were made in Zhongni and Fuxi styles, along with eight banana-leaf-style guqins, eight Cypress-style guqins and one Valley Pine-style guqin.
